The Difference Between Who You Are and Who You Think You Should Be

Who Are You When Nobody Is Asking You to Be Anything?

Somewhere along the way, many of us learned how to become who other people needed us to be.

The responsible one. The strong one. The successful one. The helper. The peacemaker. The one who always has it together.

We learn the expectations. We learn what gets approval. We learn what makes people proud. And slowly, sometimes without realizing it, we can begin building a life around an identity that doesn't completely belong to us.

So here's a difficult question: who are you when nobody is asking you to be anything?

Not the version of you that performs. Not the version that keeps everyone happy. Not the version that has everything together. Not the version that knows exactly what to say.

Just you.

The Discomfort of Being Honest

Authenticity can feel uncomfortable at first. Because if you've spent years adapting yourself to expectations, being honest about who you are can feel almost selfish.

You may wonder:

  • What will people think?

  • Will they be disappointed?

  • Will they still love me?

  • Will I still belong?

Those questions are real. But becoming yourself isn't about rejecting everyone around you. It is about becoming honest enough to stop abandoning yourself just to be accepted.

Growth Is Not the Same as Pretending

God isn't asking you to become someone else. There is a difference between growth and pretending.

Growth says: I am becoming.

Pretending says: I have to hide who I am.

Growth gives us room to change. Pretending requires us to perform.

And perhaps that's one of the reasons grace matters so much. Grace gives us permission to be unfinished. You don't have to arrive polished. You don't have to have the entire story figured out. You can still be becoming.

The Better Question

Maybe the real question isn't who should I be?

Maybe it's:

  • Who am I becoming?

  • What matters to me?

  • What do I believe?

  • What brings me alive?

  • What have I been carrying because someone else told me I should?

  • What have I silenced because I was afraid it wouldn't be accepted?

And underneath all of that: what is God inviting me to become?

Permission to Become

You don't have to figure it all out today. Authenticity is a journey.

There will be things you discover about yourself. There will be things you release. There will be things you learn. There will be parts of yourself that need healing. And there will be parts of yourself that you've been overlooking that deserve to be celebrated.

Give yourself permission to become. Not somebody else's version of you.

You.

A Heart Echo to carry with you

I don't have to perform my way into belonging. I can grow, change, and become while still being worthy of love.
